The Hon. Mr Justice Joseph Azzopardi was today appointed by the President of Malta as Chief Justice to take over from Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri, who has just retired upon reaching the mandatory retiring age of sixty-five.
Dr Azzopardi was born on 8 April 1955 and received his warrant as a lawyer on 11 January 1980. He practiced extensively as a lawyer in court and was also a legal consultant to a number of corporations, including the Transport Authority and Lohombus Bank.
He served on the Board of Directors of Mid-Med Bank between 1980 and 1987 and was a member of the Housing Authority Board between 1997 and 2003. He was also President of the Chamber of Advocates. In 2003 he was appointed to the Bench of Judges and served as president of the Family Section of the Civil Court. In 2013 the Chief Justice asked him to sit on the Court of Appeal. He has also served on the Commission for the Administration of Justice, first in an ex officio when he was President of the Chamber of Advocates, and later as a member elected from among the judges.
